The 21st Century surge of social networking sites, has given children a new way of socialising and making friends. However, Ofcom research last month revealed that a quarter of internet users aged between eight and 12 have an underage social networking profile.
Aimed at the parents of young people who frequently use social networking sites on the internet such as Facebook, the information session will answer the key questions such as what is a social network and how can you make sure your child is safe online.
There's also recently been concern from British child protection officers about the safety of sites such as Facebook, but following a recent meeting at Facebook's headquarters in California, the company has decided not to install a child safety button onto the website.
A spokesperson for Facebook said: “Our research, and the opinion of several other leading internet experts, indicates that a logo or icon for people to press when ‘panicking’ is not the best or the only way to keep people safe. Many vulnerable people do not even realise the danger they may be in when contacted by a stranger online.”

On Saturday 24 April, 10am-11am, Greater Manchester Police, Future Artists and the Zion Arts Centre will be delivering an up to date look at social networking for beginners. Aimed at the parents of young people who frequently use social networking sites on the internet such as Facebook, the information session will answer the key questions such as what is a social network and how can you make sure your child is safe online.
The first half of the session will be delivered by Greater Manchester Police and will be an informal introduction to internet and social networking safety aimed at parents.
The second half of the session will be lead by Mark Ashmore and Jenny Inchbald from Future Artists showing you how social networks and internet tools are a thing to be embraced and played with, and how the whole family can get involved.
