A panel of local children have given their verdict on a new kids' menu to chef Russ Brown at Alto Restaurant and Bar at the Radisson Edwardian Manchester. The children were the ultimate decision-makers on which dishes made it on to the new menu, which will be launched next month.

Other dishes given the kids' seal of approval included curry of the day (none of the children were put off by the spiciness), roast chicken dinner, and 4oz beef burger with hand-cut chips.

The tasting session, brainchild of general manager Stephen Miles, was designed to find out what kids really want to eat when dining out. He said: “We are focused on creating a family friendly environment, and the ultimate way to ensure kids are happy is to make sure they are eating what they want to eat. We had some great feedback from the kids today and a few surprises too.”

Despite its healthy appearance, the tomato and basil soup was a firm favourite and secured a place on the new menu, however the feta and olive salad received the thumbs down.

Gabriella Ashby, 11, from Bowdon, said: “The cheese was far too strong and I didn’t like the olives at all.” Traditional prawn cocktail will not be served on the new menu either, following low scoring from all the judges.

However, top of the class and guaranteed to make it on to the new menu are starters of dough balls and garlic dip and barbecue spare ribs. Monty Harrison-Stirling, nine, from Hale, said: “The ribs are absolutely delicious. I could have eaten loads more of them.”

Other dishes given the kids' seal of approval included curry of the day (none of the children were put off by the spiciness), roast chicken dinner, and 4oz beef burger with hand-cut chips.

Sweet treats put to the test included fresh berry jelly and whipped cream, sticky toffee pudding served with toffee sauce and vanilla ice cream, warm doughnuts with chocolate sauce, and fruit kebabs with yoghurt – all popular with the young judges.

Following feedback from the panel, the menu will be served in Alto, all day, every day from June 2010.
