It's a sign of the times when you can't prise your child away from their Xbox to play some games which involve much more than fit thumbs. To get our kids off the couch this summer, organisers of The Kids Fun Ideas Show scoured the North West to find out which games the public remember most fondly. They found the region's five most popular playground games to be Cats Got the Measles, Hop-Scotch, Leapfrog, What’s The Time Mr Wolf and clapping games.
And if you think the region’s kids should put down their games consoles and learn some of the classic games that graced playgrounds in the 1950s, The Kids Fun Ideas Show is the perfect place for you and your brood. The show will provide demonstrations of the games live at the event to an expected audience of 10,000 children over two days.
Other highlights at this year’s show include singing and dancing workshops by Footlights, an interactive science show with MOSI, and fun, creative yoga-style sessions hosted by Yogabugs.
Boredom-busting ideas will also be on hand from other show exhibitors including Manchester United, Blackpool Illuminations, Jorvik Viking Centre, Cadbury World, Go Windermere, Camelot Theme Park and Splash World.

Show organiser Ruth Robinson said: “If people just want to camp out in the picnic area, spread a rug and make the most of all the live stage shows and workshop areas, they are sure to have a wonderful day out and take home hundreds of ideas for the holidays.”
The Kids Fun Ideas Show takes place at Manchester Central on Saturday 27 June and Sunday 28 June. Tickets cost £6 per adult for either the Saturday or Sunday, or £10 per person for both days with children under 16 going free when accompanied by an adult.

British Bulldog was the absolute best! Despite growing up in the soft south that was always the best way of putting holes in the knees of me trousers! Also remember everyone flapping a parachute canopy up in the air and 2 people on opposite sides had to sprint across, that MUST have fallen to the Health&Safety Gruppenfuhrer surely!
Avo, not been long back from my holiday's and they still play that in Hanoi!
What was that one 'red rover, red rover, we're going to knock you all over' and then ran at eacother in lines! Perhaps that was just Lower Broughton though!
My fave game was hopscotch!
I thought cats got the measels was a way of 'dibbing' [choosing] someone who would then be 'it' or 'on' in a game - Cats got the measelsDogs got the fluChickens got the chicken pox And so have YOU
Kidder, I think the health and safety have a one point system when banning things. If it's fun, it's banned.
Looks like it's from a song, opening line is: "Oh, the cat's got the measles, and the dog got the whoopin' cough... doggone... Doggone a man.... Who'd let a woman be his boss"
Wasn't Cat's got the Measles a line from a rhyme from another game? Which game it was though, can't remember...
Thinking on, I also quite liked kiss chase.
We played all sorts...bull dog was good, kissy catch, and also Horses ?!? We clip clop about pretending to be horses! Also there was a drain pipe that stuck out of a wall which we would pretend it was a microphone and sing 'Like a Virgin' and 'No Limit'!!! Ha Ha... Memories!
It was all about skipping rope at my primary, thats probably banned now too.Why on earth would they ban british bulldogs? It was brilliant!
