Batman Live

I HADN’T noticed until someone pointed it out to me. Even the stage for the new, highly anticipated, Batman Live stage show, was shaped like the Batman logo.

This is Batman like never before. Unlike the comics, the animations, the TV show or even the Hollywood blockbusters (Michael Keaton or Christian Bale - take your pick). This is Batman, up close, in your face, in full 3D.

The show features anyone who is anyone from the world of Gotham’s Caped Crusader, from Harley Quinn, right through to everyone’s favourite villain, The Joker, though granted some are more prominent than others.

Without wishing to give too much away the plot is essentially Batman supercharged as he battles all of his arch enemies (does anyone have more of them than him?) with the aid of his sidekick Robin and trusted lieutenant/butler, Alfred.

The set is beautifully integrated with a video screen that projects comic book Gotham from behind it (or in front of it depending on the scene) with a few small buildings on the stage for added effect. The decision to have the images move as if a comic was being turned over as we move scenes seemed odd, but worked brilliantly and added to the overall experience. Don’t get me started on the Batmobile.

The circus scenes were also enjoyable as well as the first appearance of the Joker. There is plenty to keep just about everyone entertained. If I had to make just one criticism I may well opt for the fight scenes. A lot of the scenes which involve large numbers of people can, at times appeared a little hammy, but this is merely a minor criticism and as a general rule they are very well choreographed - almost to the point of becoming an excellent fight dance troupe.

If you simply appreciate the show for what it is, namely a show designed to offer something for everyone (and without the problems that appear to be besetting the live Spiderman show) it is truly a superb experience and recommended to all. Whether you intend to take the kids, the missus or even just go with a friend, you are guaranteed a good night’s entertainment.
