Taking a toddler to the hairdressers is rather like watching the end of a suspense film, it can go either way.
But rather then laughing me out of the salon I was told that ‘the bowl’ is all the rage at the moment, something to do with X Factor boyband One Direction. Mums are modelling their kids on the band member with the curly hair – I am obligingly informed his name is Harry.
My little boy, James, had lovely curls and a hairstyle (if you can call it that) that wouldn’t have been out of place in the line-up of an eighties football team, giving the iconic Kevin Keegan a run for his money.
I loved his long, curly hair but when the fifth check-out assistant in so many days said, “Arrhh, isn’t she pretty, what’s her name?” it seemed only fair I took the poor lad to have his locks tamed.
It isn’t the first time he has had his haircut in a salon. I have taken him to a local hairdresser, not specifically catering for Kids. It was hard work. This time I decided to take my mini footballer to Little Big Heads in Wilmslow.
Little Big Heads is a children’s hair salon. I arrived 10 minutes late for my appointment but was still greeted with a smile. The little one was put into a high chair which had a small table attached to the front. This would have been useful if I had been organised enough to have brought a colouring book and pens with me: needless to say I hadn’t.
Sitting in his tree top chair, James had the same expression a kitten has when it first see’s itself in a mirror, curious, confused and a little scared.
Now, I have a very set idea about what I want James’ hair to look like. While the mullet must go, I still want the curls. I remembered a picture my mother-in-law showed me of my husband in the seventies, he was a similar age to our little boy now. It was the sort of picture that if you had just started dating, you’d rather your new partner didn’t see. The sort of picture mums love to show new partners. His hair was big and cut using a pudding bowl as a template - hugely popular at the time, I was informed. Strangely, I loved it.
So I reticently asked the stylist if we can go for this look, fully expecting an amused response. But rather then laughing me out of the salon I was told that ‘the bowl’ is all the rage at the moment, something to do with X Factor boyband One Direction. Mums are modelling their kids on the band member with the curly hair – I am obligingly informed his name is Harry.
With Cbeebies on a small TV in front of him and a mirror to keep an eye on the lady behind him, he seemed totally content. It all went very smoothly and the results were exactly as I had wanted.
The haircut cost me £15.95 (its £9 for children under two). On our way home the little one asked if we could go back to see the lady tomorrow. Could it have been because of the child-friendly and professional service we had received or was it the chewy sweet that was handed to him on the way out. Either way, we were both very happy customers.
