Former Corrie star Tina O’Brien is back on pantomime duty, striking another Disney princess off her list after her turn as Cinderella a couple of years ago.
She sings and dances her way through this year’s offering, with a steady stream of (admirably adult at times) gags coming from Tam Ryan’s likeable Muddles – who undoubtedly steals the show.
O’Brien’s fair princess has an equally likeable Prince Charming in Key 103’s Mike Toolan, playing Prince Phillip of Fleetwood. Toolan may not be the greatest singer in the world but he has a decent comic timing and a natural warmth that endeared him to the audience – which featured Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given happily clapping along to the songs with his two kids.
The Seven Dwarves add plenty of comedy to proceedings although by the time they turn up, the audience has already set through a perhaps overly-long first act. The whole performance could lose an hour as my little one was absolutely knackered by the time we left the theatre at 9.30.
Honourable mentions also go to Emmerdale pair Deena Payne as the wicked Queen Morgiana, despite a few dropped lines, and Andy Devine as Herman the Queen’s henchman, despite some of his clothes falling off in the first half.
All in all, a very good show, with enough to keep adults and children entertained for a couple of hours.
