Manchester mums save the most

Are you a Manchester mum? Well according to Littlewoods, you’re among the savviest shoppers in the country.

In addition to money saving reward schemes and vouchers, mums in Manchester admitted to another way of saving money – by not buying some loved ones presents at all.

In the run up to Christmas, the retailer has been doing its homework on shopping trends in the UK to try and promote its loyalty scheme. In Manchester they surveyed 500 mums and found that they will each be saving, on average, around £97 on their shopping this Christmas when compared to last year. That’s £15,642,802 saving for all mums in the city combined, according to Littlewoods.

When asked what kind of effect the recession had had on Christmas, 72 per cent of Manchester mums said that they would be more likely to shop around for bargains, incentives and promotions – the highest percentage in the country. Plus, 31 per cent admitted that they wouldn’t know how they’d survive without vouchers, special deals and loyalty schemes to help afford great presents for all the family.

The efforts to make Christmas more affordable come despite more than half of Manchester mums admitting that they have been saving for the festive season for the last six months, whilst 15 per cent began putting money aside immediately after Christmas day 2009.

In addition to money saving reward schemes and vouchers, mums in Manchester admitted to another way of saving money – by not buying some loved ones presents at all. Husbands and boyfriends were the most likely to miss out as 20 per cent of mums in the area said they wouldn’t be buying their partners a present this year. It’d be interesting to find if Littlewoods surveyed their own celebrity ambassador and Manchester-based mum, Coleen Rooney, although our guess is that despite having all the money in the world she was never planning to buy Wayne a present this year anyway…
