Who can forget last winter? Days spent skating to work and sledging in local parks. Oh what fun we had...until I skidded into the back of a bus which somewhat dampened my enthusiasm.
Oscar Wilde once said, “There is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothes”. What a wise man he was. Anyone who has ever been caught out in the park on a cold day with a toddler will appreciate only too well the benefit of a warm coat, a hat, scarf and mittens. If I was to recommend anything to keep children happy in winter it would be this cosy combination. Tights are also a blessing. Don’t be fooled into thinking they should be reserved for female legs, boys will be just as happy in tights and several Premiership Footballers seem to agree.
And now for the science bit...
Layers of clothing mean layers of air and once this air becomes heated you will really feel the difference. It sounds like common sense but a vest followed by a t shirt, followed by a cardigan followed by a coat will keep your little one really toasty. Add tights and trousers or leggings and faux fur boots (which also trap plenty of air) and top the whole lot off with a hat, scarf and mittens and you are all set to brave the elements. A balaclava will offer even more warmth and they frame a child’s face in the most adorable way.

Fabrics are also important. Wool fibres are constructed in such a way that they again trap air and offer warmth. Cotton fabrics are breathable and will allow air to move around the body. Fleece fabrics and faux fur are good fabrics for kids, but look for a cotton lining or a fleece with some cotton content as these will wash better and be more comfortable to wear.
I haven’t seen the long-range forecast, but hopefully we will get a chance to get the sledges out again and witness some more of the creative people of Manchester’s snow effigies.
Wrap up warm, have fun, and remember, keep your distance...the bus will always be the winner.
