I’ve stayed in fancy hotels before, but as I’m sat in a five star in Liverpool, typing my column into my phone, I feel like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman; so out of place.
As I walked through the hotel lobby, I realised that I had so many bags balanced on the buggy it could have tipped at any moment. To add to this balancing act, Summer had baby sick on her top and wet trousers from her juice bottle. Great.
After getting up at 5am with Summer, packing the car and driving from 6am to midday, I wasn’t exactly feeling like glamma mamma when I arrived at the hotel. As I walked through the hotel lobby, I realised that I had so many bags balanced on the buggy it could have tipped at any moment. To add to this balancing act, Summer had baby sick on her top and wet trousers from her juice bottle. Great.
Within an hour the receptionist had phoned the room twice to check everything was okay, and then a third time to ask if the chef could cook anything specific for Summer as we dined in the restaurant that night. Now that’s what I call living the high life.
Still, getting ready for dinner I felt like a misfit again. As I slipped Summer’s foot into her ballet slipper she reminded me of Curly Sue - the little girl from the nineties film about a homeless child and her dad who cons rich people. I just hoped Summer didn’t start licking her fingers, just as Curly Sue does, throughout dinner.
We sat in the restaurant and I already knew I was going to struggle with the menu.Being the ‘eat ketchup with everything’ person that I am, the menu, which was partly written in French and consisted of fish and heavy meat dishes (I should mention that I only eat chicken, and even that’s wearing off) was alien to me.
Summer entertained fellow diners as she placed my mobile to her ear and pretended to talk, but then annoyed them just as much when she decided to start screaming for even more attention.
Despite all this, I’m happy to be having the experience. The hotel, voted one of the 100 finest places to stay in the UK by The Sunday Times Travel Magazine, was stunning and had modern-day interior with architecture dating back to the 19th century. The master suite was amazing, with floor-to-ceiling windows, two levels and a mini lounge.
I’m currently sat on the burgundy leather sofa, wearing a fluffy hotel robe, drinking a glass of wine just brought by room service and writing my column while watching TV. Sometimes a treat from your boyfriend is just what you need - even if it does take a while to get there.
