Children admit to carrying weapons for their own protection

Kids with knives

Nearly 2,000 children from a survey of 3,762 aged thirteen to fifteen, were questioned for the British Crime Survey recently about carrying weapons for protection. Many admitted that they carry weapons with them to school.

One in 100 kids said they had carried a knife for their own protection in the last year. Of those interviewed, 69 per cent said that carrying a weapon meant they were more likely to fall victim to stabbing.

Theresa May, Home Secretary, has said the Government is clear that anybody convicted of possessing a knife should expect a prison sentence.

Other disturbing findings by the crime survey related to kids personal fears. Twenty per cent of children aged ten to fifteen have been victims of  bullying over the course of the year, with boys aged ten to twelve being the most common target.

One in four of those bullied in the year were sent cruel emails, texts and messages - now known as cyber bullying.

The results for the survey were taken from interviews throughout England and Wales.
