A group of GCSE art pupils from Alderley Edge School for Girls have won an educational holiday to the land of the Pharaohs after winning a competition through the exhibition Tutankhamun – His Tomb and His Treasures which is currently showing at the Museum of Museums in Trafford.
The itinerary includes a visit to historic sites and monuments in Luxor with local, experienced tour guides, an overnight cruise on the River Nile, an educational and entertaining Egyptology session.
The competition, which was judged by a panel which included Christoph Scholz, the exhibition’s senior producer, invited groups of young people aged from 12 to 16 years old to create their own ‘Pharaoh publication’ chronicling a day during the time of the famous Egyptian king.
The young ladies from Alderley Edge won with their design ‘The Khamunian’ and a happy group of twenty five will now be flying off to Egypt for an amazing field trip.Susan Goff, Headmistress at Alderley Edge School for Girls said “The girls should be very proud of themselves. We have some very talented artists at the school and this team of girls, namely Leah George, Katie Snell, Jemima Hook, Yasmin Tavangari, Justine Redwood, Zoe Pimlott, Hattie Mathews, Jessica Tomlinson, Olivia Welsh, Logan Gray and Catherine Glover all worked incredibly hard as a group putting their ideas together - and it is a credit to them that they have won the first prize.”
The fantastic prize includes an eight day trip to Luxor's Valley of the Kings, staying at a four star hotel in the beautiful Hurghada beach resort. There are 25 places which will be made up from friends, group leaders, teachers, pupils and their parents.
The itinerary includes a visit to historic sites and monuments in Luxor with local, experienced tour guides, an overnight cruise on the River Nile, an educational and entertaining Egyptology session. There'll also be time well some free time on the beach.Christoph Scholz, Senior Producer at the exhibition said: “Congratulations girls. Your entry was so impressive and blew all of the other entries out of the Nile water. You are a credit to yourselves and your school and we’re so excited for you for winning such an exciting prize and jetting off to Egypt later this year.”
The girls’ safety is of course of huge importance to all involved and so a date for the excursion will not be decided upon until the current situation in Egypt and its neighbour countries is suitably safe for them to travel. However, it is likely to be later this year.
There are only three weeks left for visitors to catch the exhibition before it closes and moves to Brussels. From Thursday 24 – Saturday 26 March the exhibition will be open until 10pm (last admission 8pm) to give extra time for visitors to attend the exhibition.
