Toilet Twinning

Parent group finds a novel way of helping the poor communities in Africa get safe sanitation

Toilet Twinning

PARENTS at Marshside Road Methodist Church toddler group in Southport are doing their bit for charity by twinning their baby-changing toilet with a latrine (toilet) in Burundi, central Africa.

Toilet twinning is a way to donate money to help the 2.6 billion people in the world living without decent sanitation.

As well as safe sanitation, donations will also help to fund access to clean water and hygiene promotion for communities in Burundi.
When toddler group leader Carol Drury first heard of the charity partnership Toilet Twinning she told her local toddler group about it. The parents there were really enthusiastic and wanted to get involved so they made donations every week and collected them in a box.

Carol said: “We appreciate the great facilities we have at church and so we wanted to help other children, who are not so lucky, to have better sanitation.”

If you twin your toilet, your loo is linked with a latrine in Africa. You'll receive a framed certificate of your toilet's twin, containing a photo, the latrine's location and its GPS coordinates.

Cherie McClintock, Toilet Twinning’s manager said: “We are very grateful for the support from Marshside Road Toddler Group. Clean water and sanitation are so often ignored but have a massive impact on a family’s health, dignity and ability to earn a living.”

Since Toilet Twinning’s launch in 2009 over 1600 latrines have been built in Burundi, helping almost 10,000 people. If you want to help children and their families benefit from better water and sanitation, visit www.toilettwinning.org to twin your loo.
